First-Time Homebuyer Assistance:
Creating a Path to Homeownership
Homeownership is one of the most important ways families build stability and long-term financial security. But for many working people, buying that first home is becoming harder.
A family may be able to afford a monthly mortgage but struggle to save enough for a down payment, closing costs, or the unexpected expenses that come with buying a home.
Lynchburg should explore ways to help qualified first-time homebuyers overcome those barriers, with particular attention to the people our community depends on every day.
That includes teachers, police officers, firefighters, EMTs and other public safety employees, nurses, medical staff, and other essential workers. We should look at programs that could help these employees purchase homes in Lynchburg and put down roots in the community they serve.
That could include down-payment or closing-cost assistance, partnerships with local banks and credit unions, favorable loan programs, rehabilitation assistance for older homes, or incentives tied to purchasing a home within the city. We should also make sure we're taking full advantage of existing state and federal homeownership programs rather than unnecessarily duplicating them.
This isn't just about housing. It's also about recruiting and keeping good people in Lynchburg. When teachers can afford to live near the schools where they teach, public safety employees can live in the community they protect, and healthcare workers can build their lives here, Lynchburg benefits.
Any program would need clear eligibility requirements and a sustainable funding plan. We should bring together the City, major employers, financial institutions, nonprofits, and state and federal partners to determine what is possible and where City dollars can leverage additional investment.
We also need to keep increasing the supply of attainable housing. Homebuyer assistance won't accomplish much if working families can't find homes they can afford.
The goal is straightforward: If you work hard, serve this community, and want to make Lynchburg your home, we should be looking for ways to help make that possible.
Homeownership shouldn't be out of reach for the people we depend on every day.
